After years of suffering on and off with what was thought to be appendicitis, Will was eventually taken into hospital for keyhole surgery to remove his appendix. Unfortunately, Will did not recover from this surgery well, and developed a large blood clot that blocked one of the major veins in his leg and caused pain, disfigurement and and reduced mobility.
A claim was brought against Wrexham Maelor Hospital where he was treated. They denied liability and also denied the extent of Will’s claim for loss of earnings, pain and disfigurement. He was badly physically and psychologically affected by what happened to him and was unable to find suitable employment as a result of his ongoing pain and disability.

Understanding Will’s Surgery Claim
Will was admitted for surgery as a result of suspected appendicitis in 2008, when he was 15.
The surgery did not solve his problems, however. Several further medical appointments later it was found that he had a large blood clot in a major vein in his pelvis, close to the site of the operation. The blood clot meant that one of the major veins in his leg was blocked, with another vein becoming enlarged as it took over the role of the major vein.
He suffered considerable pain, disfigurement in the form of the unsightly swollen vein in his leg and his mobility was reduced, so that he could not stand or walk for long periods.
Experts advised that the clot was caused because an instrument had been inserted without sufficient care during surgery. This damaged the vein and meant that blood pooled in the leg, causing pain and suffering, particularly on movement and exertion.
With Ally’s help, Will brought a claim against Wrexham Maelor Hospital, where he had been treated. Liability was denied but Ally Taft was able to settle the case before trial, securing a settlement of more than £515,000 for Will.
Medical Negligence Specialist, Ally Taft Explains:
“Not only was Will badly physically and psychologically affected by what happened to him, he was unable to find suitable employment as a result of his ongoing pain and disability.
”In the initial stages Wrexham Maelor Hospital denied liability, as well as the extent of Will’s claim for loss of earnings, pain and disfigurement. However, we were able to secure a fair settlement for Will, as well as justice.
“We were able to demonstrate to the Defendant that they were at trisk of losing at trial and that therefore they should enter settlement negotiations. We also provided a lot of detail on what Will could have earned without the injury and as a result, managed to secure a good settlement for him.”
Will’s Experience Of Working With The Medical Accident Group:
The settling of the case and payment of damages meant a huge amount to Will and his family and was an important part of his recovery and closure on the incident. The damages will ensure he has the financial security to be able to work part time or set up his own business for his future.
