Harriet was known to have a history of intestinal problems and visited her GP, as the pain continued. The initial diagnosis proved to be worse than expected when Harriet was told she had suspected bowel cancer and was referred to hospital. Unfortunately, there was a delay in the hospital reporting important scans and Harriet’s condition deteriorated so rapidly, she needed to have emergency surgery. Over the course of three surgical procedures sepsis set in and a lack of oxygen given during the surgery caused a brain injury. As a result Harriet sadly died.
Harriet’s husband, Harold, approached cancer claims & misdiagnosis and surgery error claims specialist Inez Brown for help. Inez won Harold more than £300,000 compensation to cover the cost of his future health care, that his wife had providing.

Understanding Harriet’s Death And Harold’s Cancer Misdiagnosis And Surgery Error Claim
Most patients are treated well and given the support they need, but Harriet faced quite the opposite when she arrived at the hospital to be assessed. At the first consultation she was kept in for observation after complaining of more abdominal pain, and then a few hours later was diagnosed with pancreatitis, rather than bowel cancer, despite giving the doctors her medical history. Her confusion was further compounded when a third consultation resulted in a diagnosis of appendicitis. This, combined with a delay in reporting important scans, meant that Harriet’s condition deteriorated to the point that she needed emergency surgery.
Unfortunately this was not the end of the hospital’s negligence and Harriet’s trauma. She underwent three surgical procedures and, during this, not only did sepsis et in but a lack of oxygen given during the surgery had caused a brain injury. This resulted in Harriet’s untimely and sad death.
Medical Negligence Specialist, Inez Brown Explains:
“Harold relied on his wife for a lot of his own care and to provide financial support. Harriet received a substandard of care, and mistakes during surgery led to her death.
I was asked to bring a claim on Harold’s behalf, which went to court. The hospital admitted their failings and we were able to ensure, through the compensation awarded, that he could afford care for the rest of his life, was compensated for the grief suffered, and that he was not financially out of pocket.”
Harold Explains His Experience Of Working With Medical Accident Group:
“Because of the work that Inez and her team did for me I have been able to continue my life in Berkshire, on my own, in an adapted house, with a ground floor bedroom and adjustable bed. I’m visited every day for six hours by a carer, who makes sure I have everything I need.
“The compensation can’t replace my wife – who was so much more than my carer – but it has meant that I could start to rebuild my life. It’s made such a difference that, despite my lack of movement, I was able to complete a parachute jump, earlier this year, to raise money for the local town hall, that Harriet loved so much.”
