Having a baby is supposed to be one of the most joyful experiences of a woman – and man’s – life. However, joy has turned to tragedy for many more than it should in the West Midlands’ region.
Government figures show that infant mortality rates were significantly worse across the West Midlands than for England throughout the fifteen year period 2000 to 2014.
And the latest figures show that for the period 2012 to 2014, the infant mortality rate in the West Midlands was 5.5 deaths per 1,000 births, whilst for England as a whole is was 4 deaths per 1,000 births.
The rate in Birmingham was even higher at 7.2 deaths per 1,000 births. This has caused considerable concern, leading to the Birmingham Health and Wellbeing Board to prioritise efforts to reduce these mortality rates.
Extraordinarily, six of the ten local authorities with the poorest infant mortality rates in England are in the West Midlands. In the West Midlands, the number of babies who died either before birth or before aged one year old in 2014 was 738.
Ally Taft from Medical Accident Group said “The tragic death of a child for any reason is something that is incredibly hard to bear. However, when the question of whether the death could have been prevented, had competent medical treatment been provided, is added to the tragedy, this only compounds the distress for the parents and all those connected with the family.
In these circumstances the steady guidance of an experienced solicitor who is able to support the family to navigate through the legal system to gain some answers to their tragic situation is invaluable. Whilst pursuing a clinical negligence claim may never be sufficient to do justice to the loss of a young life, the process can allow some healing and comfort to a grieving family and give them a voice which they may not have been able to find on their own”.
