Update on Dr Iuliu Stan investigation – expanding the scope of abuse allegations

In a previous article (https://www.medicalaccidentgroup.co.uk/news/investigations-of-abuse-by-dr-iuliu-stan-the-royal-cornwall-hospital/), we reported on the ongoing investigation into Dr Iuliu Stan, a trauma and orthopaedics specialist at the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust (RCHT), who is facing serious allegations of misconduct and abuse. Since then, new evidence has emerged, suggesting the abuse may be significantly more widespread than initially understood.

Summary of allegations

It was found that Dr Stan had prescribed and administered rectal medication personally on over 200 occasions and sometimes multiple times to the same patient. He also failed to obtain informed consent, to offer a chaperone or to provide alternative options for the rectal medication.

A misconduct hearing earlier this year heard that the doctor subjected patients – some of them children – to “unnecessary, invasive and intimate procedures for his own sexual gratification”. The hearing also heard how “It was noted that he only administered this medication to male patients and was failing to follow the chaperone policy.”

Expanding allegations beyond suppositories

While the investigation has primarily focused on the alleged abuse related to the administration of suppositories, emerging evidence indicated that the misconduct may extend beyond this. Reports now suggest that Dr Stan also performed other intimate procedures, including the insertion of catheters and various intimate examinations, under circumstances that were medically unjustified or wholly inappropriate.

What now?

At this stage, the investigation is ongoing, but it is clear that the abuse may be far more widespread than originally anticipated.

If you or someone you know has been affected by Dr Stan’s actions, or by any other form of medical negligence or abuse, it is recommended that you seek legal advice and support as soon as possible.
