Spotlight on… Dominic Weir

We’re shining the spotlight on Dominic Weir, Senior Associate at Medical Accident Group. Dominic shares his most memorable outcome for a client and why he believes Medical Accident Group is different to other clinical negligence firms.

  1. What type of legal advice do you provide?

I help people navigate the legal process of bringing a claim for clinical negligence after substandard medical treatment. As well as seeking compensation for avoidable – and often life-changing – injuries, many clients are equally keen to secure acknowledgement and an apology for the harm caused to them or their loved one.

  1. Why did you choose your specialism?

I have worked in personal injury for more than 30 years and, over time, gravitated towards the more legally complex and medically technical cases. I came into law to help people, and supporting clients through what is often a confusing and stressful experience is extremely rewarding.

  1. What makes Medical Accident Group different to other clinical negligence/personal injury law firms?

Our team is made up of highly experienced lawyers who are dedicated to providing the very best service and outcomes for clients facing difficult situations they never expected to be in. The strength and depth of expertise within Medical Accident Group means we can support clients whatever challenges they face.

  1. What is your most memorable outcome for a client, and why?

One case that stands out involved a failure to diagnose a long-standing heart condition. My client developed complications during pregnancy and had to undergo a caesarean section rather than her preferred natural birth. As a nurse, she sadly had to give up her vocation due to breathlessness and was advised not to have more children. While her baby was born healthy, her life changed dramatically. We were able to secure a substantial settlement for her pain, suffering, and loss of earnings, which gave her financial security for the future.

  1. What is your one tip to someone who may have suffered medical negligence?

Keep asking questions to understand what has happened, and make a record of what you are told. Speak with your GP and use the complaints process – this isn’t a burden, but an important way for healthcare professionals to learn from mistakes and prevent them being repeated. Finally, remember that time limits apply to bringing compensation claims, so don’t delay in seeking advice and support from a specialist lawyer.
