Many people will have come across this surgeon and his practices recently, due to fairly regular press attention over the past 2-3 years. Mr Ian Paterson was a breast surgeon operating from the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust (Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospitals) and Spire Healthcare (Parkway and Little Aston Hospitals) in the Solihull area.
Ian Paterson had two particular methods of operating, which have been described as negligent and fundamentally dishonest by a number of independent experts.
Mr Ian Paterson regularly performed an operation now known as a “cleavage-sparing” mastectomy (CSM), where tissue was left behind in the medial part of the breast in order to form a cleavage. This type of operation obviously leaves a risk of potential recurrence and it was not discussed with the patients, none of whom appreciated that they had anything other than a normal, full mastectomy.
The second area of concern arises solely out of Mr Ian Paterson’s private practice. Women with benign breast lumps, which did not require surgery or monitoring, were kept under regular review and subjected to unnecessary, sometimes multiple operations. Many were led to believe by Ian Paterson that they were suffering from a dangerous pre-cancerous breast condition that required regular removal of lumps.
Mr Ian Paterson was suspended in 2012 by the General Medical Council (GMC). The GMC investigation into Ian Paterson’s fitness to practice is currently proceeding alongside a police investigation for potential charges for both assault and fraud. Both investigations involve hundreds of complainants against Ian Paterson.
