The Medical Accident Group successfully won compensation for Mr T after his GP failed to recognise a serious blood clot in his leg and left him needing an amputation. Our expert solicitor Robert Aldridge won compensation for the pain and suffering caused.
Mr T approached the Medical Accident Group for help – this is his story.
Mr T noticed a pain in his leg combined with a bit of swelling and went to his GP to investigate what it might be. These symptoms had played on his mind for some time. His GP quickly examined the leg and determined that there was nothing wrong. Mr T played a lot of rugby quite regularly, and the GP insinuated that this is the most likely cause of any swelling and he should take pain-killers and anti-inflammatory drugs.
One month later, Mr T visited the GP surgery again to see that same doctor after the swelling and pain was getting worse. The GP again told him it was nothing to worry about, this time without even examining the leg to confirm any suspicions. Fortunately, a member of Mr T’s family informed him of an inherited condition that makes blood clots far more likely than an average of a man his age. Taking this advice, Mr T went to see another doctor the next month.
After discussing the problems with another doctor, Mr T was immediately referred to hospital to have an ultra-sound scan that revealed a blood clot deep in his leg. The doctors told Mr T that he was lucky it was just in his leg, as anywhere else around his body could have been fatal. Mr T underwent a procedure under heavy sedation that night, but the doctor had further news upon Mr T’s awakening. Because the lack of blood had done so much damage to the leg tissue already, his lower leg was going to have to be amputated.
How we helped
Hours later Mr T was in surgery having his left leg amputated just above the knee. While the clot could have been much worse, Mr T was told that he could have kept his leg had this been noticed only a month previously with a simple routine examination such as an ultrasound. The Medical Accident Group’s solicitor secured damages for Mr T for pain and suffering, the loss of future income and quality of life, and the cost of future treatment and equipment needed to help him carry on his life.
The Medical Accident Group not only helped Mr T get everything financially he deserved, but they provided him with support all the way through the process. Mr T now has the use of a prosthetic limb attachment that has meant he can still cycle, participate lightly in some sports, and not let the amputation affect his life.
Mr T came to the Medical Accident Group after the GP mistake. He was given free initial advice on exactly what he needed to do, and provided with a home visit to assess his needs as the client. The Medical Accident Group made all this possible for him.
