In an attempt to reduce the number of stillbirths some maternity units have implemented NHS guidelines called the ‘Saving Babies Lives Care Bundle.’ This has resulted in a fall in stillbirths by a fifth.
Dr Matthew Jolly of NHS England said “These findings show significant progress in the reduction of stillbirth rates.”
There are around 3,000 stillbirths in England each year. If all hospitals follow the Saving Babies Lives Care Bundle guidelines around 600 lives could be saved. The NHS want to see improvements within all maternity care in order to bring this number down even further.
It was said by Matt Hancock the Health Secretary that “We are finally making progress towards making this country the safest place to give birth in the world and that’s something really worth striving for.” He added that “There is nothing more devastating than losing a child so this improvement is welcome.”
Ally Taft, Partner at Medical Accident Group said “The pain of losing a child is unbearable. Where that death could have been prevented, it is unacceptable, and processes must be improved to prevent these unnecessary deaths from occurring.”
