Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals Trust, who are already under investigation for a number of failures, has now also been found to have failed patients in 60 separate cases. The cases cover a 19 year period.
An internal review is being conducted by the trust. However, families do not believe that it will be objective.
A mother who lost her child in 2009 said things were much worse than she originally thought, adding that the fate of her child was sealed and has caused her “almost unbearable pain.”
It was said by a spokesman for the Department of Health and Social Care that “We take patient safety concerns extremely seriously. We have asked NHS Improvement to investigate whether further cases at Shrewsbury and Telford Trust should be considered as part of the Ockenden review, as well as assurance that the trust has taken steps to improve maternity services since these issues came to light in 2016.”
Ally Taft, Partner at Medical Accident Group said “It is a horrifying thought that so many avoidable deaths have been occurring, and that no one is taking note of the issues of concern and learning from them to prevent further deaths in the future. Any avoidable death is a tragedy for the family concerned and steps must be taken to improve matters.”
